ECHOES OF PANGUNA

ECHOES OF PANGUNA

Perched on the north-west tip of the Solomon Islands archipelago, Bougainville forms part of Papua New Guinea's easternmost border region.

During the 1980's civil war erupted when a subsidiary arm of Rio Tinto began to mine copper at Panguna Mine in central Bougainville. Opposition to the mine was met on many fronts as locals felt their land been taken, exploited & destroyed.

However, the true legacy of the conflict is not in the islands scars, but the social impact on its people, which is still apparent to this day.
